my roommate has taken to forwarding advertisements for apartments for rent and rooms for rent that are in completely far away places that i have no desire to move to. Not to mention that some of them are temporary situations only.
but one must breathe and not assume the worst.
i had an interesting conversation with landlord of place number 2 (see here) from two entries ago…
I called her to say I liked the place, but that, considering that no utilities are included, that I would like to negotiate a lower rent. When asked, I quoted a price 80 dollars lower than she was asking. She balked at that, but said she’d be willing to 30 dollars lower.
I said I’d think about it…
then few hours later she called back to say that she would offer me the place at a slightly better price – 45 less than her original price. (so meeting me about halfway from my 80 less stance)
hmm…
what to do.
the thing that’s great about this place is that I could walk to work (at least for now, until they move me aGain) from here…
hmm…
i saw one place…
it is currently being rented by a friend of a friend… who needs to break the lease in september and is eager to find another renter to avoid fees from landlord.
it’s tiny but cute and goodly-weird layout…
but neighborhood is awkwardly far from work. and from any direct subway lines to work. and i already have a get-to-work-just-in-the-nick-of-time problem.
not to mention the neighborhood is a little… edgy (in terms of safe vs unsafe.) one would think more than twice about taking the subway home late at night.
1 – blegh blegh blegh (crappy basement apt)
2 – interesting and cute enough, despite all linoleum floors. but, price seems to be high when you consider that no utilities are included at all.
3 – the landlord seemed to reject me based on race. (yes, in this time and in this place!!!)
4 – great landlord. So-so building. Very weirdly layed-out apartment. I wish this landlord owned more property, as would love to rent from someone like this.
i like living in my current place, in my beautiful and mellow (and entirely unaffordable) neighborhood, i have to come to terms with the fact that I can only afford to live here because am living with a roommate. both she and i are at the time in our lives when we are both craving our own place, and needing that sense of home, but due to financial reasons and wanting to live in a “nice” (not crazy crazy yuppie, but still mellow and calm and nice in NYC costs $$) neighborhood that is beyond our means unless one is living with a roommate in a less than ideal sitch.
so.
i am thinking i might just need to suck it up and get a studio in a less than ideal neighborhood. and try living alone for once in my life.
(no, housesitting the mansion in SF for 8 months doesn’t really count.)
so here i am, putting it out to the universe. baring my soul. Looking for a place for less than 1000, with no bugs and decently neighborhood closish to work, in NYC (preferrably brooklyn)
possible?
