I’m no longer really having any plans to get a dog.
Basically I’m a little concerned about the costs relative to the benefits and also how it might not encourage me to socialise.
Now when I’m home alone, there isn’t a dog to talk to so I will go out more often and see people etc.
This might change or be less attractive if I already have ‘company’ at home.
Also, for work purposes I no longer see great benefits, the dog more often than not likely to be a nuisance..
Sorry dog! Maybe later!

1. Companionship
Be less lonely basically. With the personal ambitions I have (outside of 43 things), I will be spending a lot of time outside and alone, unless I’d find a woman, I will also be living alone, which can be quite boring.
I often observe older single guys getting a dog. It would be mainly for companionship. Another reason single guys may get a dog is to stay out of trouble. I know of guys that had a criminal background and got a dog to look after, it gave them a steadhold not to go back to their previous living environments and lifestyle. Prisons across the world are giving inmates dogs (which in urban environments are bountiful) to train as guide dogs or simply to look after. It teaches themselves responsibility, discipline, focus, but also patience and self-control!
2. Assist in farming duties
Herding cattle… so I will be looking at a shorthead collie, kelpie or heeler, preferably no crossbred and likely a bitch so I can breed pups once I need them.
I hope to save quite some time this way, especially in hilly environments a fit dog can be quite useful. The only problem with most New Zealand working dogs is that they’re incredibly hard working. So they’ll have too much energy and constantly need to be contained unless I have enough work and responsbilities for them (even though sometimes it may not save me any time, I still need to keep the dogs working).
3. Learn responsibility
Feed, keep healthy and happy etc. Often I observe young married couples getting a puppy. To me that indicates that they’re planning to have a child. I’d highly recommend getting a puppy before a baby, it will prepare the young couple for the responsibilities that come with juveniles.
By getting a dog I will be able to demonstrate to myself and others that I am capable of having these basic responsibilities.
