Any Suggestions for a good translation? 4 years ago

The little pocket book I read about the Koran (or Quran, which is the preferred spelling?) a while ago impressed on me how important every bit is important – enough that I understood the outcry over mistreatment of this book a couple months ago.

That’s actually made me a little more timid about reading it. I want to be sure that I’m getting a decent English translation that really carries across the spirit of the work. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Or should I just go to the bookstore and pick up the first one I find? I’m fine with that, too.
