clearing out the space 3 months ago

Two brothers-in-law came over and ripped down the old fencing and fence posts so I can put in new fencing around the garden site. YAY! I need to get rid of some mesquite bushes, and old dog house, and probably some other stuff before I get to the fencing. There is so much to do, what do I do first?

Watered 2 pots of cacti on my front steps! 9 months ago

My big gardening accomplishment!

Collecting seeds 14 months ago

The last couple weeks, I collected yellow watermelon seeds. It is the most flavorful watermelon! I’m going to plant them next year.

25% of Americans garden 15 months ago

So yesterday’s news said. I think that’s high, unless they’re also counting container gardens on apartment balconies. I would count those. I need to water my container cacti this week. Today will be 97 F. in Three Points.

A string around my finger! 15 months ago

I need to remember to water my “container garden” today – my two cacti on the front porch.

Moved 2 potted cacti 15 months ago

onto the front porch steps, off to the side. They look great there. My garden, such as it is, for now.

Weeding 16 months ago

I pulled weeds for 45 minutes this a.m. before work. I have no garden, but this is a gardening activity. I’m hoping pulling weeds will help move me to other gardening activities, like growing a vegetable garden. I would love to grow some herbs and flowers too.

Wild amaranth 17 months ago

This weekend I’m harvesting some to steam and eat. It’s not a garden, but it is harvesting food on my own patch of desert.

It's a necessity 18 months ago

Growing a garden is a radical political statement. Okay, so that’s a little rhetorical, but it’s true. I know Tucson in the summer is tough, but I need to start somewhere. It’s no longer a matter of choice, but of necessity. I think in the next 1-5 years, gardens are going to start to show up like they did during Victory Garden days, because oil is going to have such an impact on food supplies and global warming, that homegrown food is going to be a necessity. What’s easy to start to grow in the latter-part of June in southern AZ? Any ideas? I need something easy so I can get started. My head is in the right place, but I’m not walking my talk.
