I’ve worked at the same store that I’ve worked at all of my life. It’s owned by my sister and my mother, mostly my sister, and I’ve been there since I was 13 so about 8 years so far. I absolutely love it, but as I’ve grown up and learned all about the marketing and sales that you deal with when you own/work at a small business, the only new things you can learn have to do with paperwork and money. It’s hard to run a small, family owned business when there is almost zero reliability of sales.
It’s not like Wal-Mart or Publix where you know for sure that you will make well over your employees’ paychecks everyday. At our store, it really depends on the weather, [it’s in a warehouse with no A/C or heater] when the students are in school or not, and when financial aid comes in for the students in this college town. And I totally understand the situation, but I need more money than I am getting.
