7. Rainwater 13 months ago

1. Rainwater can be harvested: it can be collected from gutters, filtered, and used for things like washing-machines and flushing toilets. This saves tap water being used, and is better for the environment.
2. Humans can influence when it rains! In the United States’ Eastern Seabord there’s a 22% higher chance that it will rain on Saturdays than Mondays. This is a result of pollution building up in the air over the week. How ironic..
3. Rainwater usually has a pH of just below 6. So it can be naturally quite acidic. To make it safe for drinking, it needs to be physically filtered, and also chemically filtered to remove harmful chemicals picked up as it falls through the air.

Number four! Pastry 16 months ago
  • To make pastry, you just add plain flour and fat together in a 2:1 ratio (eg. 4oz flour to 2oz butter).
  • You then add enough cold water to make it stick together into a ball, so you can roll it out.
  • Pastry is usually cooked at quite a high temperature, eg 220 deg C.

I made mincemeat tarts this afternoon!
