..and wondered why I stopped before! It’s totally changing me as I read it, especially as I’m trying to put it into practice as I read. This is just such a powerful book, it’s my Bible at the moment!
One of the best things about it, is that it’s based on no-one in particular’s teaching. The principles that Covey teaches are universal, commonsense things that are (self-evidently in my experience) true. So we don’t have to worry his ideas will suddenly go out of date or won’t work.
I hope everyone who joined me on this goal is doing well. Although his ideas are simple, they are not easy to implement because old habits are hard to break, but the effort is infinitely worth it!
Opening the book, the first thing that strikes me is the quote from David Starr Jordan:—’There is no excellence in all this world which can be separated from right living’.
This means that personal integrity, and living what you believe is really important! What do I really believe in though?
Until I really decide what I believe AND start living it, I don’t really have any kind of integrity at a deep level.
So I need to make a decision about living my belief in God, or continuing to ignore it.
Thanks for swelling our ranks!
I like your name btw, roseha-it kind of reminds me of…Hiawatha’s wife-Minnehaha. You know the one?
..but thought I’d say hiya to Janey and bluewhale. Welcome aboard :-)
by Stephen Covey-the 7 Habits of Highly Effective people. I realised when starting to read this book again, that the most important thing is not to focus on ways to improve the ways I relate to people on a superficial level alone, but to adopt the ‘character ethic’-in other words, improve who I am at a deep level and truly have self-mastery. When I’ve achieved this ‘private victory’, then relating with people or ‘public victory’ comes a lot easier, apparently. I’m going to study this book and make a real go of it.
