I am a Chemist by profession. At my current position, I feel that I have gained most of the experience and knowledge that I really need to move on to better opportunities. Yes, there is much more valuable experience to be had at my lab, but it is in another department and my employer isn’t keen on cross-training, even though they say they are. I can ask to be trained on instrumentation till the cows come home and it will never happen.
The problem is that my department is always so busy and short-handed that there is never any time left to be cross-trained. I have been working at this lab for one year come August, and I feel that if I continue to work here any longer it will be detrimental to my career. There is nowhere to go as far as supervisory positions, and I would never IN A MILLION YEARS want a supervisor job at this company anyway.
So anyway. I’m working on this goal this weekend! I have already taken the most important steps. I was referred to a much better company by a current employee who happens to be a senior Chemist at that lab. I have already spoken to a hiring manager, who told me to submit my resume online and apply for desired jobs.
I uploaded my resume on Wednesday. This weekend I plan to apply for jobs on the website and to make follow-up calls and follow-up emails on Tuesday. I also need to browse monster.com.
I’m definitely ready for a higher-paying and less stressful position that allows me to build on my experience and allows me to grow. Things have become stagnant for me recently, and that doesn’t sit well with me.
