My piano teacher was talking about meditation and how it’s a great thing to be able to do. He said that most people think meditation is “clearing all thoughts” “not thinking about anything” and that that’s impossible for a human to do. Your brain is always thinking about something.
So he explained that meditation is more of focusing on one thing and that thing only. That it can be hard at first but very worthwhile in the long run.
But his point was that playing the piano (or any instrument for that matter) is kind of like meditating. When you’re playing, you’re not thinking about anything else. You’re focused on the music. Reading the notes, the tempo, everything. And when performing, you tune things out. A cell phone ringing, a baby crying because you’re only thinking about the music.
