I recently re-read The Hill of the Red Fox by Allan Campbell McLean. Set in the 50s in Trotternish on Skye, a twelve year old boy leaves his mother’s home in London to stay in his (dead) father’s house, and gets involved in a plot to smuggle atomic scientists to Russia. The book was every bit as brilliant as when I read it at school.
Then I read Allan Campbell McLean’s Master of Morgana. Also set on Trotternish, a sixteen year old boy suspects his brother’s near fatal accident is not an accident at all, and sets out to uncover why anyone would want to kill him. Again a wonderful read, with a beautiful setting and riveting plot.
