I’ve know this was going to be number 43 from the start – not ‘cos it’s a chirpy, cheery song at all, but because it’s my favourite :)
So the night is coming down
Drowning us in blue
And it all points towards the things we
Know we shouldn’t do
Be my downfall, be my great regret
Be the one [guy] that I’ll never forget
Be my undoing, be my slow road to ruin, tonight

(and about a hundred other artists along the way, too!)
It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life
For me
And I’m feeling good
Plus just the sexiest beat ever!

Close your eyes and surrender to your darkest dreams
Purge your thoughts of the life you knew before
Close your eyes, let your spirit start to soar
And you’ll live as you’ve never lived before
This has been going through my head on a regular basis for weeks – and I really don’t mind! I confess I really enjoyed The Phantom of the Opera when it showed at the cinema, then not so much when I saw it on TV at Christmas. But… hmm. I’ve seen bits of actually stage productions on screen of late, and I have to say that none captured my imagination the way the film did – it seemed so much less… well, staged!
So anyway. I wouldn’t have thought MotN would end up being my favourite song, especially as it’s the one that garnered the most criticism in the film version (that ‘soar’ above was a rather painful note!), but it’s stuck, and I likes it!
Let the dream begin
Let your darker side give in

He’s got a brand new car
Looks like a Jaguar
It’s got leather seats
It’s got a CD player (player, player, player…)
Ah, nostalgia! :)

Urm… possibly not something that ‘goes’ with the rest of the list! But this is one of my favourite ever pieces of classical music, something I remember humming occasionally, half-remembered from childhood, without knowing what it was. Well, obviously I do now!
It’s not really uplifting in the cheery sense, but I do find it to be the most calming, soothing piece of music. A couple of minutes listening to this is like a power-nap for me!
Have a listen here if you want to know what I’m talking about.

I confess, I’ve only actually heard the bit of this song in the CSI commercial – but I love it anyway. How many songs do you get glorifying not just education, but top geekdom education?! :)
I study nuclear science
I love my classes
I got a crazy teacher, he wears dark glasses
Things are going great, and they’re only getting better
I’m doing all right, getting good grades
The future’s so bright, I gotta wear shades

I’ve a feeling this is going to get old real quick, but right now – I’ll try a little Freddie hmmmmmmm! ;)
I could be wholesome
I could be loathsome
I guess I’m a little bit shy
Why don’t you like me?
Why don’t you like me without making me try?

Okay, so I’m a sucker for the oldies! :) I love the juxtaposition between the slower and boppier bits of this ‘un.
I’m picking up good vibrations
She’s giving me excitations
Good good good good vibrations

It’s that first bit of feedback that starts the track – LOVE it! Shame the lyrics don’t really go anywhere…!
Baby’s good to me, you know
She’s happy as can be, you know
She said so
I’m in love with her and I feel fine

Time to finish this goal!
Now, I make no secret that the terribly uncool Del Amitri are my favourite band, and as a true fan (!) I should by all rights hate this song. People used to go to gigs, wanting to hear this before walking out again! In truth, it’s not representative of the band’s work at all – but it is a gloriously upbeat piece of pop fluff :) Plus, the video (with the band’s heads superimposed on babies) was so bizarrely… bizarre, along with the catchy tune, that this was one of the reasons I bought Hatful of Rain and started a musical love affair!
Look around your world pretty baby
Is it everything you want it to be?
The wrong guy, the wrong situation
The right time to roll to me
Hey – this could be the 43Things theme! LOL!
