I gave my sister a ‘travel’ violin and she gave me two chickens – and I think I ended up with the better bargain! They’re “red production” chickens and we named them Cow and Pig (after rejecting a whole lot of names – they were going to be Henrietta and Penelope but I really like Cow and Pig). I bought Chicken Coops (Judy Pangman) to use to build the coop, but although it is useful for ideas, it doesn’t really have building plans. And I went to to the feed store and bought a watering pan and a couple of bags of Chicken Starter to get me through the week.
I have to build a coop quickly – as in today – as they’re in a fenced in area and we can’t leave them out b/c of the feral cats, neighbor dogs, hawks, owls, raccoons and ‘possums. My goal is to keep them alive until they start laying, then I’ll say I can keep chickens. Five months!
