I used to play when I was a kid—we had a beautiful marble chessboard that my brother brought back from Italy. I was never great, but I won a couple of games against my older brothers occasionally. I also played a bit in college – scratch that. I would put the chessboard on the table and my roommate’s african grey parrot would throw the pieces off and then get really angry at me for putting them back on the table (he’d charge my hand and click at me in a scolding manner). It was pretty funny, but not really chess. I no long have a chessboard but it seems easy enough to find or make one. And even though it’s just a war game, I respect the level of concentration it requires.
