Dear Past-self:
Happy 21st birthday. In about a year and a half, after you’ve passed qualifying exams and are done with coursework, you’ll have serious misgivings about whether the Ph.D. program is the right thing for you. Go with your gut feeling on this one. You’ll be vindicated, though it will be several years.
The material you’ll learn in college has a half-life. You’ll forget the things you don’t use. But don’t despair. You have a lot of learning ahead of you.
