See same-sex marriage become legal on a federal basis with all rights within my lifetime

Early this week, the Senate Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs Committee voted to send legislation to the Senate. This legislation extends employee benefits to same-sex partners of federal employees. The Republicans said nothing. Joe Lieberman even voted for it!

that gives same-sex couples all federal rights of their Civil Service partner. However, in its present form, it doesn’t apply to retirees. I think the bill will be “corrected” to include us.

OPM (Office of Personnel Management) is all for this change, and says the cost will be “negligible.” Unlike straight couples, we’ll have to sign an affidavit that says that we’re partners. If it passes, that is.

Our synagogue has marchers in the parade, and we’ll join other synagogues to make a big Jewish contingent. I’m not marching, but I am joining them for breakfast to send them on their way.

From their questions, it doesn’t look good.

Prop 8 passed, we’re disappointed, but its failure has brought people out from within the woodwork, people who have never protested a thing in their lives. When rights are taken away, boy, it galvanizes even those who would be happier sitting on their couches.

No kidding. Still, what is there to do but continue the struggle? It’s been going on my whole life. So it continues.

One campaign guy for No on Prop 8 told us a few months ago that if Prop 8 goes down in defeat, it is likely that the feds will recognize gay marriages within 15 years or so. If Prop 8 passes, that time pushes back to 30 or so years. Yikes.
