I learned from this goal 3 years ago

I think the hardest part is trying to find a place to do my large monthly shopping for non-perishables. My produce/dairy/meat shopping I can do at the local independent market. I would spend more money if i continued shopping in this manner.I also think that the consequences of where you shop, are as important as whether or not it’s independent. Some of the chain stores treat employees well, and offer benefits that are not offered by local independent shops. It was a very informative experience.

So far I'm doing well 3 years ago

with this goal. I haven’t shopped at a WalMart, or ate at McDonalds, for years. I have been getting my videos from the local hardware store . The store in the small town I live in is locally owned, so I can pick up milk, eggs, etc at that store. The dairy items are actually the same price or lower than the chain stores, because they come from a dairy not far from me. I’ve been buying my gas at the Fred Meyer (Kroegers) in the past, but I am now buying from an independent station, at a slightly higher price. I haven’t bought any clothes, lately, and probably won’t for awhile. I usually buy them at the Fred Meyer store when they hit the “50% off of the lowest marked price ” rack. I can’t help it, I’ve never really liked to spend much money on clothes. I really miss the great vintage/used clothing stores in the bay area. I also haven’t needed to buy many of my non-perishable groceries. I usually do a very large shopping once a month for these items at a warehouse store 60 miles from my home. They are owned by Kroegers, too. I never realized how much I’ve supported this one corporation until now. It’s interesting. I didn’t know that Food4Less was owned by Kroegers until I started this goal, and googled Food4Less.There is another warehouse style store in Medford, called Winco. I believe they are employee owned and operated. I need to look into this more. A friend told me that Costco, though a large corporation, is known for treating employees well. I plan to look into this, too. I’d rather support a corporation that treats it’s employees well, than a small independent guy that treats employees badly (speaking as a person that worked for an independent shop that treated employees badly). This is really been an interesting experience, that is making me think about my shopping habits.
