remodle my 70s kitchen

The last owner made a terra cotta brick back splash. Its not even terra cotta which i could live with but kind of red brick. The cupboards are honey colored oak which isnt too bad, but the handles are this grotesque ornamental metal yuck. The floor is white vinyl tile with blue flowers and there is a drop down celing with florescent lighting (really dated). Generally i would describe my kitchen as dark and cheerless.
