got my hands full

After the Browniecakes fiasco, we decided to try again. (It sounds like I’m talking about having a kid, and sometimes my little dogs sure do seem like kids.)
Anyway, we decided to adopt a pup from a girl that was fostering one of about 800 dogs rescued from a puppy mill here in Tucson back in March. I spent some time checking online ads, shelters and the local pound, looking for a dog that needed a good home and would be a good fit for us. Being the animal lovers that we are, it didn’t matter what obstacles we might have to face. Well…
Let me just say this kid is WAY more than we bargained for. Thank God we are the ones that ended up with her because I don’t know a lot of other people that would be so patient and compassionate with her. Healthwise, she’s fine, but she is so crazy that I have actually had someone say to me, “She’s a little off, isn’t she?”
Given the circumstances she came from, we don’t really know what type of dog she is. She’s a small dog (maybe 7-8 lbs now), and I’ve pretty-much decided that, with the exception of her ears, she’s mostly Jack Russell. Now, I’ll bet you’re saying, “Oh,” and shaking your head like you agree. That’s because Jack Russell’s have a reputation that preceeds them. By nature, they’re hyper, but that doesn’t even begin to cover this dog. Her name is Luna, by the way. She came about her name in a strange way; but believe it or not, it didn’t have anything to do with her insanity.
To make a long story short, she ate oleander (highly toxic plant) the 1st month we got her, costing her a night in the ER and us around $700. During the 2nd month, she broke her leg. That was a load of fun—shelling out over $3500. You want some stress? Try to keep this kid still for a couple of months. She was running around the day after her surgery, and in less than a week, the pin that was holding her leg together, was coming out. Since then, not much has changed, except that we watch her a lot closely. That still doesn’t stop her from getting into trouble (a lot). No matter how hard we try to keep things out of her reach, we never know what surprise item we will turn around and find chewed to bits. I wish I would have started a list of all the stuff she’s destroyed. It would be amazing. Right now she’s chewing on the tags on her collar. Yes, it’s on her neck, but it hangs down just far enough that she can grab it with the corner of her mouth. I’ve already got her a new license tag, but her microchip tag is almost chewed in half, so I need to deal with that next.
To sum this whole thing up: She wasn’t exactly a stray dog when we got her, but she was definitely homeless and needing some love. She’s about as challenging as they come, but she is also very loving, and most days, she makes us laugh out loud. She’s definitely worth having around.

Is that you Heaven?

I’ve been looking for another dog for several weeks now, and just when I found the perfect little pup, he was taken from me. How symbolic this little photo turned out to be. That was the first and only day he was mine. To read the rest of this story, go to his doggie page on dogster.com because it’s too long for me to tell it here.

Prince Matty

I love my pup more than anything. He even has a doggie myspace on a site called Dogster.com. Ridiculous, I know, but he’s the best!
