Watch more of Ebert's "The Great Movies"

classic, hard-boiled detective mystery, something not done very often or very well in movies. I really enjoyed it. Could watch as a double feature with Touch of Evil, because I felt that a lot of the shots and compositions were similar to that movie, even if the storylines are different. Also used some of Hitchcock’s shots (the car side mirror like in Psycho) but not enough to suggest that you watch them together.

the 200 minute running time made me put off watching this film, but it was worth it. The battle scene in the mud and the rain was my favorite and I have seen filmmakers use it again and again because it works, with the mud and the spills implying futility, washing away while at the same time becoming sticky with murder.

Poignant movie about children during wartime. I have to say that I haven’t see actual child actors portray children as well as these animators designed Seitsuko. Worthwhile and I passed it on to a colleague who is also becoming interested in anime.

Jason Patric is awesome in this movie: shambling, muscular, hulking and graceful. He seems to understand everything about the plot but in the end he realizes that he saw things the least clearly. Very clever.

For noir fans. Plot, not photography, it’s too pinkish.

The cover kind of put me off on this movie: gently put your hand over it.
