The Master Cleanse is a lemonade “fast”. (Well, it is not actually a bonafide fast since the lemonade also has maple syrup in it). However, I ate no food for twenty days! All I consumed for twenty days was lemonade (lemons, water, maple syrup and cayenne pepper) and an every now and then herbal mint tea!
The reason I did this was twofold. I wanted to break my addiction to caffeine (and I did. I had a bad headache for two solid days in the beginning, but I am now “off” of coffee). I also wanted to start with a clean slate for my new style of eating. I am going to begin the “Body for Life” program that seems very reasonable (it deals with right foods, portion control, the correct combination of food AND exercise).
I lost 15 pounds doing this, but I am aware that the weight comes back when one starts eating again. Another good reason to go on my new plan. I didn’t do this for the weight loss reason, although I might enjoy the weight loss for awhile! (Generally you regain at least half of what you lose back, that is my understanding).
I certainly didn’t want to state what this was upfront since I wasn’t sure I could make it. I did make it and I am glad I did! Today I have orange juice all day and tomorrow in the evening I get to have homemade vegtable soup broth (and a rye crisp)!
After another day of soup I’ll be able to eat as usual again.
You would think I would have lost more pounds than I did..but my body must not have wanted to lose anymore than that just yet.
Years ago when I heard of someone doing this I thought it sounded goofy and dangerous. I found out that if you follow the directions completely it will be a positive experience. I doubt that I would ever be one of those who wants to do it for more than a month..but I am glad I did it and I know I am off to a good start for my new eating plan!
