I've inherited a large garden! for the moment, anyway

I recently moved interstate to live in my boyfriend’s place. It is a modest fibro house with a huge untamed garden. The plan is to do the place up and rent it out and then move to his other modest fibro home to live. So I won’t be here for more than a year.

I spent my entire Christmas holiday last year weeding the garden and clearing it up with him and his parents. His mother, 79 years old and with reduced lung capacity, has the stamina of an ox! She did as much as I did with no probs (she loves gardening).

Now that the garden is (mostly) under control, I’ve been burying all our raw fruit and veggie scraps to ‘feed’ the soil and earthworms. It’s surprising how much food waste comes out of the kitchen, and there’s just two of us. We don’t have a compost bin. I did some research on how to compost and discovered that green matter such as grass clippings and food scraps need to be mixed with brown matter such as dried grass and brown leaves. It’s hard work burying all the food scraps though, but worth it. I reckon it’s keeping stuff out of landfill.

I think there’s an onion growing out of one of the heaps.

For organic ‘pesticide’ my plan is to mix up chili and garlic and spray it everywhere.

When we moved in, there were passionfruit vines and papaya trees growing with fruit. The fruit doesnt look perfect but is still very tasty. So much better to grow your own slightly imperfect and tasty fruit rather than eating tasteless pesticide-ridden supermarket offerings.
