Though I don’t believe you have to travel to broaden your mind, I think it can certainly helps give you a sense of perspective if you’re lacking one.
I have never had the desire to go abroad before. I’ve lived in the UK all my life and moved around alot from one side of the country to another but holidays – whether for pleasure or for personal growth reasons – have not been much of an option before so I didn’t see any point in wanitng what I couldn’t do. No money, no one to take care of my two big dogs who need personal attention from someone who can handle them rather than being stuck in a kennel. There are only two people I’d trust to do that – my ex husband, and my best male friend. Both of those guys work for a living so asking them to take time off to sit my dogs whilst I go gallavanting isn’t quite fair.
However, I am moving back to my home city, where my mother, father and stepmum live. Now there is every possibilty my dad or mum, once they get to know the dogs, will be able to sit them with no probs. And as they live in the same town (unlike hubby and best friend) they wouldn’t need to disrupt their lives to do it.
Also, I have an eye condition that used to be thought could be affected by changes in air pressure such as those you get on an airplane. When I was diagnosed with it nine years ago I was told not to fly, do any contact sports, run, get banged on the head and so on else my retinas would (continue to) fall right off. But recent studies seem to indicate that flying isn’t the issue it was once thought to be to this condition (myopic macular degeneration). A chat with an eye consultant at Moorfield Eye Hospital in London last month proved encouraging.
So maybe travel abroad is not out of my reach afterall !
