make the volleyball team

As of right now I’m in the middle of tryouts with four days to go until we find out if we’ve officially made the team. I’m definitely not playing varsity, because they’ve finalized the team for varsity; but I’ll probably be on JV. At least, that’s what I’m hoping!

Our club season ended on Saturday, and I’m looking forward to tryouts on 8/15. I’m hoping to get in some practice time before then so I won’t be rusty.

I think doing club definitely helped though, and I’m feeling better about a position on the JV team.

We played really well today, winning 3/4 of the games. The last game was pretty difficult as we made it to the Gold division, which is the highest one comprising of the first six teams of our club, but we were seeded first and we played the 6th team; we lost, unfortunately and it was single elimination! Oh well, we had a couple of obstacles such as 3 people not being able to make the tournament.

Since 1/3 of our team didn’t show up, I played for the entire time which is pretty exciting. I’m starting to think that I shouldn’t be too worried about making JV next year, but I’m definitely still worried.

Club volleyball ends around 6/20 though, and volleyball tryouts are 8/15. I hope my skills last that long and I don’t get completely out of shape by then. I’m planning on practicing in the two month gap, as much as I can at least.

I was talking to a couple of people at the volleyball tournament yesterday, and they thought there was even the possibility of me making the varsity team next year.

I haven’t been playing that long, so I don’t think I’d be comfortable playing at the varsity level just right now. I know it would feel right playing on the JV team and I’d be happy with that. We’ll have to see how it goes at tryouts on August 15th!

I talked to one of the varsity players this year, and she thinks there’s about a 90% chance that I’ll make the team next year.

I suppose the only thing really, though, is to try my best now, practice, and do my best at tryouts which will be in August.

So far we’ve had two volleyball tournaments, and at the second one we got our jerseys. Apparently I’m #10, which was my third choice but that’s okay. I’m still pretty happy and they fit pretty well. They’re also not that bad looking.

The first tournament went horribly for us, but the second one did go a lot better, which is good. I’m thinking we’re improving.

I’m really bummed since club volleyball started but the practices currently coincide with Academic League matches. Since Academic League only goes until the end of this month with only 4 matches left, it’s really important for me to be at each one.

However, volleyball only has two practices per week, one on Tuesday and one on Thursday. I’m missing the Thursday practices since Academic League starts only 30 minutes later than each one and goes for at least an hour longer. It wouldn’t be worth it for me to go the first 30 minutes of volleyball because that’s just stretching.

I’m kind of upset about that, but so far Academic League is going well so I hope that I won’t be giving up 4 volleyball practices for nothing, as getting onto the volleyball team is a goal of mine.

Club volleyball had our first practice yesterday and I’m really sore now. My calves especially, although I’m not particularly sure why, perhaps due to the sprints which I haven’t really done for 4 months.

I think I’m the youngest person on the team, and definitely the least experienced. Which, of course, just means I have the most to gain. For now though, I’m pretty lost and I’m hoping I learn pretty quickly because I’ll definitely need to do so if I want any playing time.

I’m pretty sure that after completing this that I’ll have a stronger chance of making the JV team next year which makes me happy.

I was on the novice volleyball team this year and I’ll have you know that I worked just as hard as varsity in terms of conditioning. Although, that doesn’t really matter because the novice team really will take anyone.

Anyway, I’m trying to make the intermediate, junior varsity, team next year and it’s going to be a bit harder because on the actual varsity team this year, there were only 3 seniors, which means there were a high amount of juniors.

All of those juniors will probably try out for varsity again, like a 99% chance, and there’s a 99% chance that they will also make it. Taking that into consideration, that means the large junior varsity team next year might take some juniors and have them stay on the junior varsity team because there won’t be enough varsity spots. Then, the junior varsity team will have spots that are taken, and this year’s novice team will have a tougher time getting onto the volleyball team.

In other words, even though I was able to make the team this year, I’m going to have a way tougher time making it next year. In order to combat that difficulty, I’m doing a season of club volleyball which is set to start next month and I’ll have about three hours of practice each week, and tournaments on the weekends.

I’m glad that I’m doing club volleyball and I know that it will help me improve my skills. Since the head coach of volleyball at my school is the same as the head coach of club volleyball, I’m hoping that that will help my chances of getting on a team next year.

I’ll try to update as frequently as I can once club volleyball starts about my experiences. Additionally, over the summer I’m planning on getting together with a friend in order to practice because she wants to make the team next year as well.
