Since I plan on moving there…
1. Chicago was founded in 1833 as a town to link the Great Lakes with the Mississippi River system. It soon became a transportation hub of the Northwest Territory, with major connections by steamboats, canals and (by 1855), railroads. By 1890, it was one of the ten most influential world cities.
2. During the mid-18th century the Chicago area was inhabited primarily by Potawatomis, who took the place of the Miami and Sauk and Fox people. The first non-native settler in Chicago, Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable, was Haitian and arrived in the 1770s, married a Potawatomi woman, and founded the area’s first trading post.
3. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 (rumored to have been started due to a cow, but proven to be started by the O’Leary’s carelessness), Chicago experienced rapid rebuilding and growth.During Chicago’s rebuilding period, the first skyscraper was constructed in 1885 using steel-skeleton construction.

I had to write an essay about this, so here’s 3 points:
1. The interstate system is a direct effect of the Cold War. It is modeled after the German autobahn, after Eisenhower saw it when he was on tour in Germany. It is meant as an easy way for planes to land, if need be, while also providing a quick way to navigate through the country.
2. The Cold War had no offical beginning. Yep, that’s right. Experts say that it began in 1947, but it was something we just “fell into”.
3. Eisenhower was the one who thought up the concept of NASA.

In honor of his recent death::
1. Gerald Rudolff Ford, Jr. was born on July 14, 1913 as Leslie Lynch King, Jr. His mother began calling him Gerald after she married Gerald Rudolff Ford, Sr. (Gerald’s father had a drinking problem and was abusive).
2. He was the first president that was not elected to either vice presidency nor presidency (the VP under Nixon resigned, and Nixon appointed him, then the Watergate scandal occured, and Nixon resigned, leaving Ford to be President).
3. Known for (by the Schlesinger poll): “Lack of charisma, pardoned Richard Nixon, Whip inflation now, Helsinki Accords”. Ranks 23rd best president according to the CNN 2000 poll (sounds good, however, it’s below Clinton…)
