It is true that by giving respect most often you receive it back. On a superficial level people respect people by their appearence. On a deeper level you get respect by being informed, or capable or when you are reliable, sincere and honest. Typically people who take themselves seriously receive more respect. I believe people who take themselves seriously are more likely to be more deliberate in their actions.
myself I try to be serious but I can also see the humour in things and myself.
