Well shoot

I didn’t do this one at all this week. I’m too easily distracted by other things. Will do better this week.

I've been...

working on this one again. I did it 3 times in the last week. The week before I was a little more successful. Sometimes I don’t get to this until it’s too late and past time for bed. I think I will get better at this if I can keep the TV and PC off after a certain hour.

Oh man...

I’ve had to set this goal aside to prioritize sleep recently. I end up getting home waaay too late and then I’m just too exausted to make time for it. If it’s after midnight the best use of my time is not to read newspapers.

Will try to get back on track soon.

Oh Oh...

Only did this 3 or 4 out of the last 7 days. Time to refocus.

I'm doing it

I did this four out of the last seven days. Mustn’t get overconfident, and keep plugging away. I’ve done this 13 days so far. Will check it off when I get to 100.

I've done this...

9 days since 8/29/11. I wish it were every single day, but this is good and acceptable progress. The stack of newspapers is lower and Walter noticed. Now to keep going…

I've started...

a spiral notebook to track my progress on some of these habits I want to implement. I’ve managed to spend time going through newspapers the last 5 days straight. If I miss a day here and there I won’t worry too much about it, but I want to track my consistency for a while to set the habit of doing this more days than not.

I keep...

losing momentum on this one. It’s time to make a renewed effort to get this done consistently.

48 Days and Counting

I’ve done this 48 days so far. It’s getting a bit harder, I think, as my focus drifts off to other changes that are urgently needed. I managed to miss 2 days in a row recently so I’m hoping to get through the rest of the week without missing a day. If I can get to 100 days with consistency I will mark this one done.

Very Sad News

My newspaper, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer will print its last paper edition tomorrow after 146 years of publication. I can’t express how sad this makes me feel. This paper has been the voice and historical record of a community for longer than any of us has been alive.

The P-I will continue online. For a paper with less than 120,000 print subscribers it ranks in the top 30 online newspaper venues in the country. They will be enhancing the online presence of course. Can they make it profitable? Only time will tell.

I am sad for all the people who lost their jobs. Where are those people going to find newspaper jobs these days? Only 20 of 180 newsroom staff members were retained to work on the web version. They hired 20 new sales staff for the web.

Now it is true that the P-I is not Seattle’s only major newspaper. The Seattle Times remains – for now. Our subscription will be automatically switched over to the Times on Wednesday. So this goal will continue for me. Although I must say my hoarding impulses are testing me as my beloved newspaper becomes something rare and vanishing. Looks like I started this goal just in time.

Tomorrow’s last P-I should be a very special commemorative issue. They are promising 20 to 24 pages of photos and stories on the P-I’s 146-year history. We live in a large apartment complex and the paper comes to our door out in the hallway. Walter is planning to get up extra early to get our paper tomorrow so no one steals it before we can get it. Needless to say, that issue will not be recycled.
