god I hate being so British!

I should probably make clear what this goal is all about. Which I will do by using a rambling anecdote (sorry).
A while ago, I bumped into someone I had known at university. We were both pregnant, I was about 3 months further on than her. Being British, we were exchanging the usual pleasantries. But her American husband insisted I pull up a chair (we were in a cafe) and share my pregnancy experiences and tips with them.
Somewhile later, I was in a different cafe with my baby in his pram. I saw the husband, couldn’t quite remember his name, but smiled and said hi in a British kind of way. He said “Hi! I can’t remember your name but you’re a friend of my wife’s, we met in X, how’s it going?” and we chatted and talked babies etc.
So I really admire that way of being, instead of my own British social ineptitude. I am always so embarassed about forgetting people’s names or the names of thier kids or whether they have a new job, or whatever. I wish I could be like the American husband of my tale and just come out and ask. I will try to be more American and less British in this respect.
