the fact is that the right wing (rapture right, american taliban, conservative christianity, call it what you like) as co-opted, captured and defined the word family to the point that it basically means the following:
- a heterosexual couple
- 2.3 children
That’s not a family, unless your last name is Nelson and your first name is Ozzie or Harriet. This kind of family only exists on television and in the delusions of crazy people.
My family doesn’t look like that. No one I know has a family that looks like that. Here are some of the things that the term family might include (no this is not a complete list):
- a single parent
- multi-parent (more than two)
- same sex couples
- different sex couples
- children
- grandchildren
- grandparents
- aunts and uncles
- cousins
- god-parents
- neighbors
- baby-sitters
- friends
Does this mean that every family has to have all of these things? No. Does this mean that the current definition of family will be meaningless? No.
The plain truth is that everyone belongs to a family. None of them look exactly the same. And all of them are of value.
