So it has taken eight months to do this.
Tomorrow we will finish the last two stairs on the stairwell. The curved landing is done. I am heartily sick of the smell of sawdust, though I really like working with saws . . .
The bathroom is tiled and the baseboards are down; my clothes are stowed. The bedroom floor is finished, the quarter round is down, as is the threshold between the bath and the bedroom. Just need to varnish the threshold for the area between the bedroom and the landing. That goes in tomorrow (weather permitting varnish to dry). Then I will clean said floors, knowing me, for the last time until inlaws visit ;) Next week, the stairs – no, REALLY!
the backerboard and tile are out. note to self: next time pay the man. easier than hauling the crap away, plus I owe my kids a couple of meals and time off for good behavior. tile guys are in, they are grouting tomorrow (and replacing the toilet, which leaked). i am getting too old for this. the hardwood is the last flooring i will install myself (i told my old man this today)
Installation of the steps has halted for the moment. My bathroom/closet floor is crappy, broken tiles, shattered grout. I decided to have someone else install a new floor for me; catch is, I have to remove the old tile and subfloor by Saturday. Half way done with the tile, the backerboard and screws look like they will be a pain in the ass. This is the long way of saying, I wanted to wait on the steps until work boots were done tramping up and down my staircase. This should all be done within the next seven days then, back to the steppes . . . er, I mean, steps.
Okay, so I spent part of Tuesday scraping down said steps. They need to be smoothish before laying wood on the steps – the adhesive won’t stick otherwise, and I don’t want unsightly nailheads marring my pristine work ;) Won’t get anything done today, a combination of thunderstorms and a spider bite are laying me low today. For whatever reason, working with power saws in an open garage during a thunderstorm bugs me. However, I am getting my kids to finish the scraping today. Tomorrow I glue and nail. Really!
I have just about finished trimming the lips off the stairs (sounds painful). The skill saw I have is about to give up the ghost – with 1/3 of a step to go. Smoke began curling from the trigger, so I decided I better let it cool; I really do not want to buy another saw just to finish this project. In a bit, I will chisel all the glue and crap off the stairs. After a little clean up, it will be a day. Even with the AC, the temp is rising in the house. Tomorrow I need to cut stair nose and start installing the risers. Asked my husband to touch up the paint in the stairwell – I will probably need to do it; that way it gets done before I install the wood. >sigh<
