Shopping at Soundclash 2 years ago

Soundclash is my local recordshop and I’ve been buying records in there for a while now. I’m good friends with Spencer the guys who basically runs it. I popped in there at the weekend. Finally got round to picking up my own copy of William Elliott Whitmore. Browsed through the latin section and found a remix by Bonde do Role, a brazilian group who’ve done alot of Baile Funk type stuff. Didn’t know who they’d remixed but gave it a listen. It’s a nice african drum track by Tony Allen overlaid with Bonde do Role’s typical Baile Funk rythym. I’d never heard of Tony Allen so I looked him up on Wikipedia and it turns out he was the drummer for Fela Kuti, the founder of Afrobeat. Another avenue of music I like but have yet to fully explore. Spencer also reccommended an album while I was in there of Cuban/Nu Yorican Boogaloo and after giving it a listen I bought that too. As usual I spent far to much money in Soundclash.

Went to a record fair at the weekend 3 years ago

Didn’t have to much money to spend but fished through a fair few boxes of records. Couldn’t really listen to them and not really knowing what I was looking for I bought 3 albums on the strength of what I saw. I ended up with..

On the Road – Sonny Terry
Funky Blues a jazz record feat John Coltrane
In the Court of the Crimson King – King Crimson

I was especially pleased with the Sonny Terry. A great slice of Amercian Blues. The jazz I’ve yet to find time for and King Crimson is an interesting pyschedelic record and will be played again soon.

Thanks to a friend 3 years ago

I discovered William Elliot Whitmore the other day. Loving the new album and want to explore similar americana now.

This is 3 years ago

probably the one thing on my list I’ve actually worked at recently. I’ve been discovering new music all over the place. I’ve been slowly discovering more and more great reggae. Had a bit of a flirt with reggeaton, soca, dancehall and calypso. Traveling around the world in the confines of my own room taking in mexico, cuba, brazil, peru, spain, senegal, ghana, and lots of other countries too. I will recommend thes albums…

Notorious by Turbulence
Lda Vs. the Lunatics by Los De Abajo
Techari by Ojos De Brujo
The Dusty Foot Philosopher by K’naan
Cansei De Ser Sexy by CSS

and not on here I’ve been exploring here
Mainly in the brazilian section. I quite like this guys philosophy. Its all about the music not a fancy website. Of course now I have an even bigger list of music to buy and no money to buy it with. oh well.

Yey for music 3 years ago

Found loads of new stuff in the last couple of weeks.

The Nextmen – great hip hop and turntablism
Saul Williams – Wicked hip hop poet
Shirley Bassey – We all know this welsh songstress, but have you heard her remixed?!
Joe Purdy – Nice acoustic guitar
Loads of Funk & Soul
