I’m just catching up on some of my goals. I forget about this site sometimes. However, I do remember this goal. I haven’t bought any books for a very long time. I think that I’ve forgotten what it’s like to browse a bookstore, actually.
In order of finishing them, the last books I read (and will take them off of that list from 9 months ago) are:
Skinny Legs and All by Tom Robbins. Loved it! I was actually a little surprised how it is still so relevant to what is happening in the Middle East. I know it’s a work of fiction, but it still made it enjoyable. It’s hard talking about that book while you’re reading it, especially if someone hasn’t read it or they are not familiar with Tom Robbins. You just end up sounding crazy talking about the spoon and how happy she is to be cleaned up, etc. But, it really is a great book.
The Bean Trees/Animal Dreams/Pigs in Heaven by Barbara Kingsolver. Again, great book, or should I say books. I love the characters that Kingsolver creates. They are all characters that I would like to know in real life. Or, perhaps, they remind me of people I know in real life. This was a 3 in 1 deal from a book club I used to be a memeber of. I was a little disapointed with the ending of Pigs in Heaven, though. It was realistic, maybe to a fault, but it just left me wanting something more. I don’t know what that is exactly. Not necessarily another book. I suppose just sadness at having to say goodbye to these characters that I’ve fallen in love with.
I Thought My Father Was God, and Other True Stories from NPR’s National Story Project. A collection of short stories by non-writers. It was great. If anything, it inspired me to try to write daily. Even if no one reads it, but just record my stories. Maybe in a journal form, maybe as stories. I obviously haven’t started this! But it’s a good read. i would recommend it for an Airplane Book.
And currently reading:
The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass by Frederick Douglass. Amazing. I personally think that every American should read this. If it wasn’t required reading for High School History, shame on your History Teachers (mine included)! That’s not to say I would actually have read it in High School, but that’s a different subject. I love that this book reads somewhat like a novel, and draws the reader in. Douglass only gets a little wordy in the letters he includes that he has written to other people. Highly recommended.
