This is a hot topic in Finland at the moment. I took the easy way to ‘stand up for what I believe in’ and sent a text message to a daily newspaper that publishes them for everyone to see (...duh!). In it I basically said that there’s no need to demand that lesbian couples fulfill the role of a father in a family, since there’s no corresponding legislation demanding that hetero couples have to fulfill the role of a father either. It’s not like there are any perfect parents or perfect circumstances, and denying lesbian couples the chance to raise their own children (through artificial semination) would also require denying any and all “unfit” hetero parents the rights to have children of their own. In my opinion!
This sort of determining who is “fit” or “unfit” to have children is arbitrary at best; a whimsical way of using political power that shouldn’t have any place in this day and age. Of course I admit not just anyone is ready to have children, but this topic is about two adult females in a loving union.
Maybe the global level of chauvinism just fluctuates where women are in highlight as something other than a sex symbol.
Afternote: The newspaper didn’t publish my message. Oh well…
