we are trying an ayurvedic diet at the moment. the basic idea is that you cup your two hands together and eat only as much food as could fit in them at any one time. then you wait at least three hours between every meal and snack. this means that if you’re hungry you get about four or five (or even six) little meals per day. also, part of our plan is that one of the meals every day is a fruit smoothie, and one is a salad. other than that, we eat whatever foods we want.
we’ve been doing it for about a month and have already lost some fat and are feeling better, and it actually wasn’t that hard to adjust to. after a few days it was pretty easy to feel full with a smaller amount of food, and the variety of small meals can be fun (though a little hard to combine with social eating)

we’ve been experimenting some with healthier preperations. made some pretty good cookies with half the oil as usual and some whole grain flours, and even managed not to eat the whole batch at once. so that’s all going well. i think for me it’s still the sheer amount of produce that i should be eating that’s daunting.

james and i have decided that we’re chubbier than we used to be, and should go on a diet. the diet is this: take a break before having seconds, try to generally have only small portions of junk foods. not too strenuous, i think. hopefully it will work.

having a mixed week with this one. i’ve eaten lots of greens, some whole grains and other things i don’t traditionally like, but i’ve also eaten a good bit of junk food, toast and popcorn, especially when we’re low on exciting good food.

i’m vegan, so that’s a start, but i like starches, sugar and salt way too much, and i’d like to lose a little weight. i looked at the new usda food pyramid recently, which told me i should eat 3 cups of vegetables and 2 of fruits every day! that would be great, but produce costs a lot more than grain, especially if you try to eat organic (which i do). still, i’ve been trying to increase those categories when i can, like getting a nice salad as a treat occasionally instead of a cookie or something.
