I have been a type one diabetic for over thirty years…and have done a decent job of keeping myself in good shape. But this year I ballooned up to 260 pounds and for a guy 5’11 it was too much and the sad fact was I finally had test strips to moniter my blood sugars and I was making it a priority but I couldn’t keep from the constant hunger I felt…either from the anxiety and stress of not keeping my numbers any where near 80-120 or the fact that insulin does in fact make you hungry~!!!!
so…in september I was given a new drug called “symlin” which I take five units at each meal that slows down the digestive process, keeps my numbers more consistent and by slowing my digestive system down I am not hungry after I eat…not one bit
...at first it made me a little nausated but that soon passed and I was dropping pounds like a pro…I could pass the hot banana bread and never look back. I lost 4 to 5 pounds every month and now I hope to reach my goal of losing twenty pounds by my three month anniversary which is only 3 to 4 pounds away.
For the first time in my life my numbers don’t represent the rollarcoaster ride of highs and lows I have tried to manage all this time. my numbers are far more predictable and manageable and I’m looking forward to the next a1c test which I know will be far below my 7.5 three month average that had the doctor worried…had my doctor worried and I know there’s diabetics walking around with A1c averages of 12 and higher…its sad how people become complacent with their numbers and either quit testing or don’t see the relevance or lack the money or insurance to buy them…its all about testing and keeping your numbers between 80-150…at least 80-100 would be better.
dieting, and a little walking everyday to help the medication be more efficient…when I found out you could reverse the serious complications that had set in with tight control I wondered why this country hadn’t moved to make sure every diabetic had test strips, knew how to use them, were given “symlin” if necessary and save the billions of dollars paid out for kidney diaylsis, amputation, and all the other heartaches that go with this elusive, and sneaky, painless killer. well, I said my peace…if you know a diabetic, let them know how much you want them to take care of themselves…
tell them you want them around as long as possible and that you’ll walk that walk with them if they need it.
