Installed vmware tools. VMware’s instruction were wrong. Following http://hacktolive.org/wiki/Install_VMware_Tools_on_ubuntu worked instead. Time to make a copy of the vmware files and do #2 on my list.

Beeping killed via yahoo and experimentation. Tried several methods, only one that worked was to edit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and add “blacklist pcspkr” to it. Had to use “sudo gedit blacklist.conf” to edit it.
Installed it (via vmware). Quite painless, not as quick as expected and who thought making it beep when you shut it down would be a good idea? Need to kill the beeping and install vmware tools…
Since the website I intend to create will run in PHP on my install of Ubuntu it makes sense to learn the basics of Ubuntu too. I don’t intend to learn it to a sys admin level but to a degree where I know where/what to do when I want to do something. I’m fairly competent with Windows having used it since the win 3.11/dos days so getting to a level where I could ditch Windows should I choose to do so is the point at which I’ll consider Ubuntu learnt.
I’ll be reading Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference first, which is for 8.10 even though I’m using 9.04
