Part of my proposed Fulbright project involves volunteering in Czech hospices in order to get an idea of the elder experience there. My advisors suggested that I do the same in the U.S. as preperation for the possibility of getting the grant, and I am finally getting around to it. The Bessie Burton Skilled Nursing Facility is on-campus, well-organized and staffed with friendly and helpful people, but I am still terrified. My first real day of volunteering is Jan 14th, when I will be reading aloud to Dementia patients. What does one read to Dementia patients? I refuse to touch Nicolas Spark’s The Notebook. Suggestions?
