Oh, how I wish I’d brought the tome with me on my work junket in New Jersey! Reading Dubliners and its notes while here has made me more inspired to pick up the big U again and get past page 150 this time. I’m debating on whether I should pick up some Ulysses notes and criticism to have as companions to the novel, versus just blasting through the book and then going and seeking out others’ opinions. I’m already familiar with the plot and the characters, and I’ve read enough articles about Bloomsday the past couple years to know about the locales. And I spend enough time reading weblogs and LJs to have come across a fair amount of commentary from Ulysses vets on the most treacherous chapters (Oxen of the Sun, anyone?). The only thing left to do is read the actual text, yes?
I’ll read the Updike novel I brought here with me, and then I’ll start tackling Ulysses again when I get home.
