Musipedia

Just discovered this site this morning (July 10th 2005), thanks to a post on a mailing list. Have only had a chance to explore it slightly so far, but it looks like it could be quite a useful tool. I think the general idea of it is for people to be able to identify/find/locate a tune they’ve heard or have in their head or what-have-you, but I think it could be useful in other ways too. Specifically, and the point of this goal, I’d like to start cross-checking new themes of my own against the search there to ensure I’m not unintentionally quoting some other work. Oddly, I thought I’d done that in Luctus (the most recent recording I’ve completed and added to my music blog ), as once I’d finished it, the thematic elements seem overly “familiar” to me for some reason. I still suspect the theme is from some other work that I’m not recalling correctly, or is a variation of such a theme, but so far I haven’t been able to find it in the Musipedia so maybe Luctus isn’t such a failure after all.
