Changing this goal’s name from ‘Expand My Music Taste’

Mostly because its not so much finding new cds I like, more finding ways to see more live bands, ones I already like and new to me bands too.

I’ve just ordered a batch of CDs I’ve been wanting for ages, including two by artists from the previous list (Operation Ivy and Airbourne)plus an album by Skindred, who my friends and I have just bought tickets to go and see in October.

So this is partly expansion and partly re-inforcement of my music taste which is doubly good. Can’t wait to get them added onto my iPod!

Another idea I had was to search for my fave album (...And Out Come The Wolves by Rancid)on Amazon.co.uk and then go throught the ‘people who bought this also bought…’ suggestions for inspiration.

Many of the albums it suggested were stuff I already have and a few that I knew I wasn’t interested in. The remainder has given me a list of bands to go at…

- The Cure
- Glasvegas
- Dropkick Murphys
- Airbourne
- Operation Ivy
- White Lies
- Seasick Steve

One of my friends has the Cure’s Greatest Hits and the latest Dropkick Murphys album so I can borrow those from her soon. I’ve also heard good things about Operation Ivy so will buy thier ‘Energy’ album when I next get paid. I’ll see how they work out and then continue down the list.

Funny think happened earlier this week. My friends asked if I wanted to go to see Reel Big Fish who are one of my fave bands, but I couldn’t afford to go.

Later that evening my friend texts me saying ‘Check out Random Hand, excellent ska punk band, and local too’ (they were supporting RB Fish)I laughed because I’ve seen these guys a couple of times and actually asked my friend to come see them sometime last year with my but she declined.

So, I told her this and am hopeful that she may have more faith in my taste in local bands now. Or failing that, at least she might go and see this band next time they play somewhere local.

I feel like I need to experience more music. More genres. More live stuff. More up-and-coming bands.

The problem is money (as usual) and the fact none of my friends appear to have the same need. They are quite happy with what they’re into and will go and see their fave bands do shows but don’t see the possiblility of discovering new music from local gigs like I do.

I have one friend who plays in a band and up until the end of last year ( when I lost my job) I went to all their gigs. This was great because I could see the other bands they played with, and it got me out and about meeting new people. I am going to start doing this again. However, it doesn’t completely solve the problem as a) my friends are busy at the gigs and so it can be a bit lonely sometimes and b) I would like to experience this stuff with other friends too.
