Just advised one of my students to join the Peace Corps and put him in contact with a local recruiter. The Peace Corps would be perfect for him, and he’s already got the Peace Corps ethos.
Cross your fingers for him!

....so maybe I should be open to having this as a second-career option, or maybe I’ll keep this as a long-term goal and remove it from here in order to make room for other, more immediately-attainable goals.
Still, I think it’s worth mentioning. My partner spent some years after college in the Peace Corps, in Poland, and he was particularly struck by the wisdom and grace of a woman who joined in her sixties. Because of her age and experience, she was one of the most valuable members of his group. He admired her greatly. When he told me her story I thought, “What better way to give back after a lifetime of receiving?”
So, Peace Corps (http://www.peacecorps.gov/) or perhaps another, similar organization in my golden years. Best retirement investment yet.
