The trouble with kittens and puppies is that you have to do all the hard work, the pee, the training, and you have no idea what their personality is going to be.
If you get an older cat or dog, say a year, or 18 months, up to 3-4 years, they have got over the bad habits and hopefully have a lot of good ones and are not such hard work or so destructive.
And a lot of these animals are available, sadly, because someone wanted a kitten or puppy but then did not stick with it, or, in some cases, life just happened, they had to move, or, for example, the owner gets sick, dies, and so on.
So it is terrific to want a pet, and certainly you can go on petfinder.org and look at the 90k or so pets available (more now with all the terrible things that are happening in So cal and still in the New Orleans area with pet overpopulation), but older animals need homes too.
