do a reading program for exceptional children that works

As a special education teacher, I and my students struggle with feeling successful in a social order that often casts out only those who have the advantages of interpreting and understanding the written word. I would love to open the gate for these kids and do it in such a way that it actually works, and consistently. I know it is hard work, but I also believe learning should be enjoyable. Anyone out there who has had lots of success in this area? I would like to know what has worked for your kids.
