"If I could have those days again / I think I'd do things just the same" 5 months ago

I’ve been listening to a new (new to me that is) band almost non-stop for a couple of days now. This Swedish band plays indie-pop (whatever that is) and the vocalist, Frida Öhrn, has a wonderful voice with a hint of huskiness. They’ve released only one album to date, and their songs seem to be a mixture of melancholy and happiness, there’s certain positivism in some of their songs, whereas others seem perfect for those bouts of gloominess.

And they have probably the best name in the whole universe: Oh Laura.

;)

because I feel I’ve started to pay attention to unfamiliar artist more than before, I’m also more open to new music and actively try out different genres and so on. :) I’ve also already found new bands and artists that I now love very much (to name a few, Soma, Porcupine Tree and my newest finding, Disco Ensemble), so I feel like I’ve completed this goal. Naturally I will continue getting to know more artists and broaden my music knowledge, I still have much to learn. :)

I’ve found some new music again. :)

I discovered Róisín Murphy a couple of weeks ago, she was listed as a similar artist to Sophie Ellis-Bextor (who I very much adore, by the way) at Last.fm so naturally I had to sample her. Well, I was rather impressed so after some pondering I ordered her Overpowered album from Amazon. :D I love it, she has an interesting voice and well, the songs are cool. I think I’d like to try out Goldfrapp now as well, it seems there has been a lot of hype around them lately, or have I just imagined everything?

Just a moment ago I also ordered two albums from a finnish indie pop/rock band called Soma and I’m smitten. This much melancholy won’t probably do much good to me in the long run but damn, if this isn’t just my kind of music then I don’t know what is. Yeah, I’m a depressed and grumpy Finn who listens to music that only makes her even more depressed. :P But omg really, can’t wait to get those CDs. ♥

I’ve been listening to Poets of the Fall a lot lately (especially the past two days since I happened to acquire their latest album, Revolution Roulette), and even though they’re not ‘new’ to me, since I’ve known about them for a very long time and listened to them last year pretty much, I feel as if I’ve somehow rediscovered them now. I can still remember how I couple of years ago thought their music must be very boring because their name sounded so dull. Oh those times. :’D

Howie Day (up there in the picture) is one of the artists I’ve found through Last.fm and ever since I’ve been very fond of his lyrics and songs. He also has a nice, soothing voice, so I usually listen to him when I feel agitated or otherwise stressed. I’m eagerly waiting for some new material from him, he’s been really quite for some time because of a few, hmm, incidents.

I found Hayley Westenra much the same way as Howie Day, I think I was checking similar artists to Sarah Brightman at Last.fm and stumbled upon her artist profile. What intrigued me, I think, was that she has Irish heritage and that she sings Celtic songs (which I’m very fond of), so naturally I wanted to try her out. She has such a beautiful voice, and considering how young she is (20) her vocals are amazing. Very tranquillising.

I found Elefant when I somehow ended up checking out their Lolita video on youtube (when it still worked for me, boo) and getting it stuck in my head. :D I only have one album from them, their latest, I think, but I really like it. It’s… funky in some funny way, a bit different from what I usually listen to, or so it felt at first, but now I’m used to it and I like it. :D

Porcupine Tree 22 months ago

Okay, so here’s the deal. I’ve known of their existence for a long time but for some reason I had always thought their music wouldn’t really “hit” me so I never actually bothered sampling their music. Then something happened (no, I do not wish to explain it any further) and I decided to give them a try.

Hell, why hadn’t I found them earlier? I have only listened to a small portion of their wide discography but I already feel – no, know – that this could be so much more than just a passing interest. I hate admitting I’m new to some band, I greatly dislike declaring that I am, in fact, a noob when it comes to the said artist. I also feel like people are judging me for that, so I usually end up keeping my new interests to myself, at least for a while, till I know a bit more about the band/artist. I have got to get rid of that, though, sharing new music with others should be fun.

Last.fm is a great place to find new music, I have a couple of artists I’ve found through that site, I could actually make a list of the artists I’ve got to know thanks to last.fm some time… but that really deserves an entry of its own. :)

Back to Porcupine Tree, I’ve listened to their 8th studio album Deadwing a lot lately and have greatly enjoyed it, and I’m definitely going to listen to their earlier albums as well, I do have them, I just need to find the time to really listen and get into them! (Fear of a Blank Planet sound rrrrreally good as well)
