Quit or get fired? 14 months ago

Do you ever feel like you’re subconsciously trying to get fired? I have been slacking so much at work lately that it’s a wonder I’m still there. I feel like I’m allergic to my job. I’ve been at it for years, and suddenly I can’t take it anymore. Well, actually I never was totally happy with it, which is why I’ve had this goal on my list. Even though I complain endlessly about my job, I never look for another one. I’m wondering if I have to quit and put myself in the desperate position of being unemployed to get motivated to find a different job. Leaving with some dignity would be better than being let go for poor performance. But it goes against everything practical and smart to put yourself in danger like that. The economy and job market aren’t good, and thousands of people in my city lost their jobs recently. It’s not a good time to be out there looking, I suppose. Uf. Help.

So, I heard there is a new policy here that temps will only be kept for a year, starting in January. That means this really is the year for me to move on. This is good … I need as much motivation as possible to do this on my own terms before I find myself unemployed!

First Positive Entry 2 years ago

Today I actually searched The NY Times and printed some possible positions! I also started to update my resume! This is huge progress for me, as I have been blocked (unwilling/unable to do this) for a long time. I’m so proud and happy to have started taking some steps in the right direction. It’s frightening, but I’m learning to have courage.

Health Insurance 2 years ago

A job I love would have to provide health insurance … or the love wouldn’t be complete.

Rising 2 years ago

This goal is rising to the top of my list. As soon as I’m done moving I need to take at least a small action on behalf of this goal. I will remember that finding or opening up new doors does not mean I have to go through them. I can stay where I am until I’m ready (unless I get laid off). But I need to start exploring options.

So what do you do? 2 years ago

When people ask you what you do, they think the answer will reflect who you are, what you love, your talents, goals and dreams. So I find myself telling them what I do and explaining it’s just a job to pay the bills. I want to be proud of what I do! I want it to reflect who I am!

My Job Is Soul-Sucking Boring!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2 years ago

I’m dying. I want a cool job that I love. I really have to start making this a priority. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.

Inspiration from You 2 years ago

I got an idea from another 43 Things person. She committed to a quota of two job applications a day.

This ended up getting her a great job – one she wouldn’t have applied to normally because she thought she wasn’t qualified, but she applied to make her daily quota.

She suggests picking a specific time of day (or two) to do it. I don’t know where to fit it in, but picking the time is the next step.

Clinging to a Job I Don't Love 3 years ago

Time to at least look elsewhere for opportunities to get my mind going on what I want.
