“But do your thing and I shall know you.”
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

like so

ah…here i am.

...

There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, A quickening
That is translated through you into action,
and because there is only one of you
in all of time
this expression is unique.

And if you block it, it will never exist
Through any other medium,
And will be lost.
The world will not have it.

It is not your business to determine
How good it is, nor how valuable,
Nor how it compares with other expressions.

It is your business to keep it yours
Clearly and directly,
To stay open and aware
To the urges that motivate you.

Keep the channel open.

~~Martha Graham, to Agnes DeMille, in Dance of the Piper~~

I found

stretched canvases primed with a gesso made to receive water media. Ink, gouache, watercolors, conte, charcoal…all the things I’m using on paper. I think I’ll check that out now…
Turning on the lights and music…

OK. I'm in...

Starting is easy. When there’s nothing there, everything is possible. But when it already has history, I must respond to it. Sometimes it’s evolution, and sometimes revolution.

I have to find a way

back into some of the unfinished pieces. A re-entry point, so I can find resolution. It’s hard to go back there; to re-visit all these marks that embody the memories, thoughts and hopes from when I last worked on them. But closure requires it. Too much is unfinished.

resolution

I’m reconsidering the issue of scale. Too much flux, not enough space to work large right now. I need the portability, the flexibility, the feedom and the intimacy of working small. I will honor the circumstances that currently constitute my life, and still maintain a connection to my work. It is time to speak quietly, but clearly, to move in closer and touch more deeply…Softly spoken words require greater attention, and often carry the most salient truths.

It is my intention to find resolution in the unfinished pieces; to close the deal on (some) works in progress before starting anything new.

I’m working small again, craving expansion. I choose larger now.
