i've realised something.. 11 months ago

i’m ridiculously slow when it comes to reading fiction, yet when it comes to factual books on subjects that appeal to my interests- (e.g documentaries, politics, travelling, philosophy) i can read a 200 page book in 2 days. the same length fictional novel will take me WEEKS.
however, i’m studing english LITERATURE at uni. maybe this is telling me something?! either way, a degree in english lit is quite versatile for a future job (i think..i hope) so with a bit of luck i’ll make it through this degree and obtain good grades, then even if i never pick up another fictional novel again, at least i’ve read some of the ‘classics’ through my course, and it will give the impression i’m articulate..i do plan to read a few more fictional novels, and feel guilty that i read less than a lot of people who DON’t study english lit, but i’ve made my choice degree wise, and i’m capable of completing the course, therefore i plan to complete it to the best of my ability :D

i can't believe it.. 2 years ago

it’s taken me about 4 1/2 weeks to read a 400 page book (admittedl;y i gave up a bit in the last week) surely that is not normal for a student about to study english lit?! I REALLY THINK I AM GOIING TO FAIL AT THIS RATE :S

wait. i’m not going to. i WILL change =)

ok so i've finished "frankenstein".. 2 years ago

it took me about a month to read, again.. i am in serious need of taking a speed reading class lol! :S

ok book #2 2 years ago

..one of the books for my university course, “frankenstein” by mary shelley. it’s amazing, because you hear so much about frankenstein that i assumed i knew the narrative already, but it’s completely different to what i expected (and really good!) this is the book i’ve most enjoyed reading so far, i’ve had it for 3 days and read the first 50 pages – which although it doesn’t seem like a lot, from someone who barely reads novels it is a HUGE step forward =) i recommend!

finally finished that book.. 2 years ago

..it took me 4 weeks (ish) :P (now thinking how egotistical and trivial this comment is- as if anyone cares how long it took a random 43tr to read a book XD ) oh well this entry is more for a personal reason than to be entertaining- although i do have some more interesting entries sometimes- that might actually be interesting for people to read on 43 things..haha

ok so i've improved a little.. 2 years ago

am nearly at the end of a book i started reading recently..however it will be the 4th week tomorrow since i started reading it and i have been reading bits every day..it’s about 300 pages but that’s it and it’s taken me that long! i told you i was a slow reader.. :S on a more positive note though, when (and not if) i finish it, it will be the 3rd book i have managed to read all the way through since last sept (ok- not exactly great for a future university english student lol- progress is progress though!)i’ll keep posting these to keep track of my reading progress..

how stupid am i?! 2 years ago

i’ve always been naturally good at english luckily, and b/c i couldn’t really see myself being able to do anything else i decided to do my degree in english. i definitely want a degree in something. the problem? i HATE reading. don’t get me wrong, not the stories/narratives themselves, but i have a really short attention span. it’s so much easier to just a watch the film version of a book so i get lazy. and even the books i find interesting i get about half way and then stop. this is not good! i am starting my university course in sept, where i will be required to read books regularly, by myself not just in class. i realise that the last sentence makes me sound like someone illiterate, or a beginner reader, not someone who plans to take this as a degree in higher education! it’s too late to make another choice now, and i enjoy english itself, just not the reading. yesterday i picked up a book and found it pretty interesting, but chances are i won’t finish it. i know i take ages to read books and sometimes i panic at the sheer number of pages, thinking i can never read all this in x amount of time..” i need to start practising. *NOW. before it’s too late and i get kicked out of uni =)
