Realizing the purpose I already have

More and more I have begun to recognize that I already have a special purpose and I don’t need to embark on some great and mysterious quest to find my purpose. I have begun to realize that one part of my special purpose is to be the best friend, husband and eternal companion I can to my wife.

Each time I spend more time with her I recognize what a strong feeling I have afterwards that I have accomplished something. The accomplishment seem simple, almost trivial, but I’m sure its not trivial to her. I give her my time. There are other things I could be doing, but more and more often I just feel like I’d rather be spending the time with my wife.

There are times like when I’m reading to her that it feels like we have become far closer to one another than I could have ever imagined.

Perhaps a special purpose doesn’t have to be some earth shattering thing. Maybe just being there for someone is enough in the big picture. Maybe its something that we may not recognize its importance now but in God’s plan it is of great worth.

Am I to be a speaker?

Every time I have some opportunity to speak, people tell me that I have such a wonderful speaking voice. They encourage me saying that I should be an announcer or something.

I’ve not pursued this because I already have a full time job, I’m taking a college class and I volunteer at my church. The thought of doing more with public speaking is not totally out of my mind though and that’s why I joined Toastmasters.

Perhaps speaking as a teacher would fit with my goals. I really want to pursue my engraving and I can imagine one day instructing others in that subject.

Finding my strengths

I just started reading “Now, Discover Your Strengths” by Marcus Buckingham. The book includes a key code that allows you to access a website where you can complete your personal strengths finder profile.
I enjoyed the profile and reading about what my top 5 strengths were. I was a bit surprised at 2 but the other three I would have probably picked from the list. Apparently my greatest strengths are:

Strategic
People strong in the Strategic theme create alternative ways to proceed. Faced with any given scenario, they can
quickly spot the relevant patterns and issues.

Input
People strong in the Input theme have a craving to know more. Often they like to collect and archive all kinds of
information.

Intellection
People strong in the Intellection theme are characterized by their intellectual activity. They are introspective and
appreciate intellectual discussions.

Maximizer
People strong in the Maximizer theme focus on strengths as a way to stimulate personal and group excellence. They
seek to transform something strong into something superb.

Empathy
People strong in the Empathy theme can sense the feelings of other people by imagining themselves in others’ lives or
others’ situations.

I would recommend the book. It’s been fun so far.
