Honestly, I’m really not entirely sure why. And it’s never going to happen…if things go the way I hope, I probably won’t be done with this current bout of schooling until I’m 40 anyway. But I had this friend when I lived in New York who did intellectual property and antitrust law for one of the big firms, and a couple of times when she was having trouble with a brief she was working on, she would show it to me. And it was really fascinating stuff. Arcane and obscure (regulatory filings before the FCC and weird shit like that) but mindblowingly interesting. Also a little bit scary, I realized, because it’s in documents like that that nobody ever sees or hears about that a lot of how the United States functions, socially and economically, gets thrashed out.
