I’m still overseas, but I’m living in a house with a television, but so far I really haven’t sat down and watched any tv. I consider this a very good sign, but the real test will be when I go back home in three weeks. After four months with very little tv, I find that I really don’t miss it that much, but that may change when I get home. However, I plan to hold off on the cable installation until the fall to reinforce my new habits.

I’m doing really well on this one. Why? I don’t have a tv. It’s in storage with the rest of my stuff. I’m going through a slight Star Trek withdrawl though. However, I’m hoping that I’ll be able to get more stuff done without a tv around all the time.
but I won’t have a tv to watch while I’m there, so I think I’ll be doing really really well on this goal shortly.
It’s noon on Sunday, and so far I haven’t watched any tv today. I’ve got a paper to write and a mountain of laundry to do, so I really don’t have any business watching any tv today anyway. However, yesterday at Target, the bright cover of a shiny new dvd beckoned me. I knew I just had to own The Best of She-Ra Princess of Power. It’s sitting on my coffee table right now, calling out to me. Hope I can resist the dvd’s call to sit on the couch and watch the fabulousness that is She-Ra. Too bad though, Sunday is such a good dvd watching day.
I’m actually watching less tv, and this impresses me because I’m watching less tv AND being productive all at the same time. Just now, I unloaded my dishwasher—I’m doing chores! Of course, I’ll admit that I’ve replaced some of that tv time with internet time, so I still need to spend a little more time being productive.
Since summer school started last week, I’m watching much less tv because I have to get my reading and paper writing done before class. I wish I could say that I’ve spent my free time doing something really cool and interesting instead of watching tv, but I can’t. If I’ve got a spare thirty minutes, I’ll probably be watching a Star Trek show of some sort. However, the point is, I’m watching less tv now, and I don’t get the sense that I’m wasting as much time as I used to.
In the end, that’s pretty darn good.
Yesterday, I came home after all my Easter festivities, tired and hot. What did I do? I left my parents, who were visiting me, in my living room, closed the door to my bedroom, and didn’t watch tv. I graded papers. I actually finished the amount I needed to get done, and read Albert Camus’ book The Stranger (very trippy book by the way). I didn’t watch any television, I did something productive. Score one for me against the television/box of evil.
And in the end, limiting my tv watching can only help me in accomplishing some of my other things on my list—I’ll probably procrastinate less and clean my apartment a little more.
The tv is a box of evil that sucks me into its little world. I won’t read, do my laundry, clean up, etc—I think it’s my main source of procrastination. But it’s so good though; it brings me star trek, anime, and telenovelas
