Citizen Kane 2 years ago

My favorite part is when his second wife leaves him and he trashes her immaculate room. What fun! I already knew what “Rosebud” meant from the start, which took away the suspense. Still enjoyable. Sixty movies down! Forty left!

North by Northwest 2 years ago

Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint are mesmerizing in this film. Hitchcock is truly a brilliant director. The crop-dusting scene is marvelously suspenseful and I love it when the plane finally hits a truck and explodes! It looks a bit funny when the couple is being chased across a Mount Rushmore set. I never knew that Martin Landau could be such a spectacular villian.

Psycho 3 years ago

The original version is definitely more compelling than the 1998 remake starring Vince Vaughn and Ann Heche. Hitchcock ensures that his audience is invested in the characters. My favorite part is at night when Sam Loomis is searching for Detective Arbogast at the Bates Motel. Norman Bates has just disposed of Arbogast’s body and hears Loomis shout out “Arbogast!” Then Bates has the most chilling look; the whites of his eyes are luminous against the darkness.

Reservoir Dogs 3 years ago

Quentin Tarantino is just plain fun. I love Kill Bill, so I was looking forward to this one. All I have to say is that scene in which Mr. Blonde tortures the cop is pretty rough. (The DVD extras are worth watching, too.)

The Usual Suspects 3 years ago

Since this movie has already been out for 11 years I already knew what the surprise ending would be. I thought this movie was good, but I was a little let down. Probably hearing a good deal of hype about it for so long gave me high expectations. What did manage to surprise me, however, were the mesmerizing blue eyes of Gabriel Byrne, Stephen Baldwin, and that Redfoot guy. ;) If you rent this DVD, be sure to watch the Gag Reel included in the Special Features. It’s pretty funny.

The Seventh Seal 3 years ago

This movie was striking. The use of light and dark is so interesting visually. That scene with all the mendicants and priests walking through the village was scary! It was neat when the priests swung those censers with burning incense and all the smoke swirled around. I’ve never seen Death portrayed so creepily (is that a word?). I like it when Antonius and Death are talking in the church and Antonius says, “I see. Within our fears, we made up an image, and we call this image God.” This movie also made me laugh when I realized that “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey” paid homage to it. Who doesn’t love hearing Death say “You sunk my battleship?”

Annie Hall 3 years ago

Well, now! This movie counts for 2 of my goals since it’s also a winner of a Best Picture Oscar. How nice. I like the part when Alvy tells Annie “I more than love you. I lurve you. I loave you.” I laughed the most when they’re in line at a movie theater with the loud, opinionated professor behind them. Did you notice that Sigourney Weaver has a bit part at the end as Alvy’s date when he meets up with Annie after they’ve broken up?

Rear Window 3 years ago

James Stewart was great in this. Grace Kelly’s wardrobe rocked. It is such a suspenseful movie throughout. I guess Alfred Hitchcock really IS the “master of suspense.” Is Jeffries right about his murderous neighbor or is he just going stir crazy? You don’t find out for sure until the ending, but his peeping certainly has disastrous results! Oh, and I never realized that Raymond Burr played Lars Thorwald. I used to love watching “Perry Mason” reruns with my dad in the 80’s.

Jaws 3 years ago

If you see bits of this film whenever it’s on TV, you have no idea how suspenseful the whole thing is put together! I love it when Brody says, “Smile, you son of a bitch.” Poor Quint.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 3 years ago

Watched this one last night. Jack Nicholson was great, as usual. I forgot how cool the Chief was. Poor Billy Bibbit. That nasty Nurse Ratched deserved to be strangled. The horror of electro-shock treatments and lobotamies is haunting.
